- Let the Season begin! The red nose has appeared on the leaping stag, signaling the official opening of the Holiday season here in Portland. I used to be grumpy when people started up before Advent. And I still don’t like stores wanting to rush us all through Halloween and Thanksgiving, so they can get to their big shopping season. But these days, I think of the end-of-the-year celebrations as a kind of grand winter festival, and am happy to see it come. Often, people are a little bit more friendly, and a little more willing to let down their guard and be silly. We allow ourselves to have fun. And we take a little more time to think of others and strengthen our connections. It was always my favorite season, as a child, and I suppose it always will be. So, while it’s not Advent for another week, ‘tis the Season!
